Fractional CTO

Senior technical judgement, without a full-time hire.

Some decisions are expensive to get wrong: the architecture, the first engineering hire, the agency contract, the platform you build on. We sit on your side of the table for those decisions, a few hours a week.

From $2,500/mo

In short

A fractional CTO is an experienced technology leader who works with your company part time, setting technical direction, reviewing architecture, guiding hiring and overseeing developers or agencies, without the cost of a full-time executive. Technical due diligence is an independent review of a company's software, team and risks before an investment or acquisition. FIMM provides both from a senior team that has shipped software since 2018, on a month-to-month basis.

What we build

What we build.

A

Technical roadmap

A plain-language plan that ties product goals to architecture, team and budget, reviewed with you each month.

B

Architecture and code reviews

Regular reviews of design decisions, pull requests and infrastructure, so problems are caught while they are still cheap to fix.

C

Hiring support

Role definitions, technical interview questions and candidate assessments for your first engineers or an in-house lead.

D

Vendor and agency oversight

We review proposals, estimates and delivered work from outside developers, and hold them to a clear standard on your behalf.

E

Technical due diligence

An independent review of code quality, architecture, security, scalability, software licences and team practices, delivered as a written report.

F

Security and cost oversight

A regular look at access rights, backups, cloud spend and third-party services, so nothing important is left to chance.

G

AI-generated code review

A clear assessment of how much of a codebase was produced with AI tools and whether it is tested, secure and maintainable.

How it ships

How a fractional CTO engagement runs.

We learn your business and systems first, agree on the decisions that matter most this quarter, then work in a steady weekly rhythm.

01

Listen

We meet your team, read the code and documents, and learn the commercial goals the technology has to serve.

02

Assess

A written view of risks, strengths and priorities across product, code, infrastructure and team.

03

Lead

Regular check-ins, reviews and decisions, with written notes so your team always knows what was agreed.

04

Hand over

When you are ready to hire a full-time CTO, we help recruit them and pass on everything we know.

Frequently asked

Common questions.

What does a fractional CTO actually do each week?
Usually a mix of planning sessions with founders, architecture and code reviews, check-ins with developers or agencies, and help with hiring or vendor decisions. The balance shifts with your stage. Every engagement starts with an agreed list of priorities, so the hours go where they matter most.
How much does a fractional CTO cost?
Fractional CTO support starts from $2,500 per month, billed month-to-month with no long contract, and you can cancel anytime. Technical due diligence is also available as a standalone review.
What does a technical due diligence review cover?
Code quality, architecture, security, scalability, infrastructure costs, open-source licences, data handling, documentation and the team's development practices. The result is a written report that separates serious risks from normal technical debt, with a view on what fixing each one would involve.
Can you review an app that was built largely with AI tools?
Yes. AI-assisted code is now a normal question in due diligence. We check whether it is tested, secure and understandable by the people who will maintain it, and whether its structure will hold up as the product grows.
Will you replace our existing developers or agency?
That is not the goal. We work alongside your current team, help them make better decisions and hold delivery to a clear standard. If a change is needed, we explain why and help you manage it.
Do you write code as part of the engagement?
The fractional CTO role is about direction and review rather than day-to-day coding. If you need build capacity as well, our senior engineering team can take on development work as a separate project.
Is this a fit for an early-stage startup?
Often, yes. Founders without a technical co-founder use it to make early architecture and hiring decisions well, to evaluate agency proposals, and to prepare for investors' technical questions before a raise.
Who will we actually work with?
A senior member of our delivery team who has shipped production software since 2018, backed by our engineers when a review needs a specialist. You keep one consistent point of contact for the whole engagement, and every decision is written down.
